This coming August 3rd, the 12th annual Val di Sole Award for Transparent Journalism will be presented in the splendid setting of the “Sosta dell’Imperatore” conference centre in Folgarida. Organized in 1996, the event is characterized by meetings focusing on a single theme: the problems of journalism, political information, transparency in sports journalism, information and the environment, sign and drawing, information oriented towards women, investigative journalism, international information and journalist-writers. Many well-known journalists have been recognized at Folgarida: Piero Ostellino, Ferruccio de Bortoli, both directors of the “Corriere della Sera” at the time, Candido Cannavò, Piero Angela, Enzo Biagi, Emilio Giannelli, the winner of many awards for his editorial cartoons, Natalia Aspesi, Gian Antonio Stella, Joaquin Navarro Vals and Giampaolo Pansa. The Folgarida Prize has earned a prestigious national reputation for the prominence of the honourees and the timely and intelligent discussions organized by the moderator and president of the jury, Albino Longhi, several times the director of TG1, and the extraordinary commitment of secretary Aldo Albasini, supported by the Folgarida Tourism Consortium, the City of Dimaro, the Autonomous Province of Trento and many agencies, associations and private companies. The Award also has important links to the local area through its recognition of the Adamello Brenta Nature Preserve and honourable mentions of regional journalists, Trento area citizens who have made a name for themselves abroad and the best doctoral theses on the Val Di Sole. The formula for the event has changed over time. Once chosen by a popular jury, today the recipients are selected by a traditional jury of prominent local and national journalists. In fact, the ceremony itself has also evolved. The first editions were accompanied by more or less successful performances, later oriented towards Alpine choruses, before settling on the formula of a debate with the award-winners: a wealth of information and an in-depth view of the virtues and vices of Italian journalism. This has made the annual award ceremony a lively and stimulating cultural event for the Trento area that has ended up eclipsing the prize's original purpose of promoting tourism. The recognitions awarded to the Adamello Brenta Nature Preserve, Federico Mazzuoli, Gianfranco Mazzucca, still the director of QN, Mario Rigoni Stern, Mario Tozzi, Flavio Faganello and Giulio Ielardi are also examples of the same trend. The Nature Preserve has also received a separate award for the “Life Ursus” project.
