Since 1902 some of Sweden’s most prominent artists have visited Abisko Mountain Station to find inspiration for their work. In 2003 H.M. the King of Sweden, through the Prince Carl Gustaf foundation, the administrative board of the county of Norrbotten and the Swedish Tourist Association, instituted a grant to enable a young artist with a sustained interest in nature to sojourn at Abisko Tourist Station for three weeks, to focus on his work and learn about the unique surroundings. Each residency ends with an exhibition at Abisko Tourist Station.
The recipients of the Abisko Grant for 2006 and 2007 were artists Magdolna Szabó and Matteo Rosa. Originally from Hungary and Italy respectively, both Szabó and Rosa are based in Malmö (Sweden). Magdolna’s artistic practice focuses on abstract painting and printmaking, while Matteo’s ranges from drawing to video and installation.
Szabó and Rosa are represented respectively by Galleri Magnus Åklundh (www.aklundh.se) and Galleri Ping-Pong (www.galleripingpong.se)
