THEATRE AND PEACE

Sara Mañas Lezameta

Peace requires much more energy than war and, above all, well directed. The performance of "El Sorteo de Casina”, by Plautus, in the context of the XIV Youth Theatre Festival of Mérida by the theater group PARODOS, constitutes only the visible face of a school community project that shall show that Peace comes from dialogue and carefully listening to each other. Each identity is included, understood, and respected, allowing the coexistence of a spectrum of thoughts and life choices each one of us shall define and vary in their own journey.Centuries ago, the same play may have been performed at the Teatro Romano de Merida, whose beauty, together with its historical value, presents itself as the ideal setting to evoke Classical Culture. The Gods of Olympus granted them a radiant sun, under which twelve young actors provoked our first laughter.
Between 6 and 11 years old, they filled the auditorium with attentive listening, introduced and explained the play under the astonished gaze of 3,000 people, softened upon facing such a spicy and sincere response.Their admired elders, moments later, staged a story of romance, where the reasons and ways represent a complete departure from the romantic cliché. The shameless and innocent character Mirrina, the dances of the new actresses, the funny lines of the cheats in love, the feigned ignorance of the nanny, the amused regard of the two black ladies, all occurring in a maze of events that led to a roar of laughter. A laugh in life is the best remedy for all evil and a seed of Peace. This theatre group gives visibility to the people who share the Siberia Extremeña Secondary School. The theatre that Silvia Perez Zarco runs has become a symbol of identity that stems from the commitment of many individuals. It integrates all local artists in a common forum; the “Culture House” and the Secondary School join forces in theater, and the indispensable participation of parents has given it deeper roots. While any education system has inevitable limitations as an integration system, prioritizing the development of certain properties over others, theater turns to creativity, which is capable of generating its own new guidelines.
Each expression mode is wrapped by the rest; Babel leaves misunderstanding and discord behind and finds the richness of dialogue in an amalgam of sounds, colours, dancing and thoughts. Everyone develops their artistic and creative abilities, which find resonance in the sensitivity of the viewer and the balance of the whole. In diversity, creativity expresses its most spontaneous behaviour. Creating a reality, where original thoughts are appreciated and encouraged, helps assemble each idea with your colleagues’, in a complex harmony that leads to sharing and understanding of emotions. Indolence recedes and gives way to activity; the actor knows that reality can be changed day by day. It is evident that the relative values of the stage of life are resolved behind the scenes, to appear suddenly before one’s eyes, in an instant, and then the show still goes on, it does not s stop, we move into time eager to live the next scene, the next act, with the heritage of our experience and a new role in our hands. Art rises above impositions and prejudices as PARODOS does, and with unanimous applause from here we urge them to “Let the show go on!”
